Inulin Market Size in Africa

The African inulin market dropped modestly to $X in 2021, falling by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a slight downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Inulin Production in Africa

In value terms, inulin production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of inulin decreased by -28.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,102%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inulin exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 609% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), mixing up a 20% share of total exports. Angola (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+120.7%) and Mauritius (+43.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +120.7% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+68 p.p.), Mauritius (+20 p.p.) and Angola (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

Angola, with a CAGR of +206.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -54.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 448% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+38.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Inulin Imports

Imports in Africa

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of inulin decreased by -43.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 419% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, inulin imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 282%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 6% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the inulin imports, with a CAGR of +188.9% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+93 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-84.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inulin in Africa, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +126.5%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -24.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
