Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 92%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), comprising a 5.3% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+25 p.p.) and Egypt (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iodine, fluorine and bromine supplier in Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
In South Africa, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 133% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.0%).

Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of iodine, fluorine and bromine were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Zambia (X tons), distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the major importers of iodine, fluorine and bromine, together making up 71% of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +43.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zambia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 47% share of total imports. Angola, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Algeria, Swaziland, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Mozambique and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
Angola, with a CAGR of +24.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -20.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
