In 2021, the African iron or steel can market decreased by -1.3% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.1%. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, iron or steel can exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X units) and Tunisia (X units) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Botswana (X units), together comprising a 16% share of total exports. Morocco (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +18.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest iron or steel can supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Morocco and Benin, which together accounted for a further 13%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Benin, with a CAGR of +17.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of iron or steel cans was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron or steel can imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Algeria represented the major importer of iron or steel cans in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Libya (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units) and Seychelles (X units). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Mauritius (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Senegal (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of iron or steel cans. At the same time, Ghana (+63.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+63.5%), Zimbabwe (+28.7%), Morocco (+12.5%), Ethiopia (+10.5%), Seychelles (+7.8%), South Africa (+6.1%) and Egypt (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +63.9% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-1.1%), Senegal (-6.0%) and Tunisia (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+13 p.p.), Morocco (+12 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.6 p.p.), Ghana (+4.9 p.p.), South Africa (+4.5 p.p.), Seychelles (+3.4 p.p.), Ethiopia (+2.6 p.p.), Libya (+2.2 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.2 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel cans in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria totaled +2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+10.8% per year) and Seychelles (+13.0% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
