Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, steel plaited band exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), generating a 5.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Namibia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 9.3% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+16.4%), Kenya (+12.5%) and Tunisia (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kenya and Tunisia increased by +4.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest steel plaited band supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 4% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.2% share.

In South Africa, steel plaited band exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+7.9% per year) and Kenya (+7.9% per year).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of iron or steel plaited bands and slings increased by 50% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, steel plaited band imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) and Benin (X tons) represented the key importers of iron or steel plaited bands and slings in Africa, together finishing at approx. 36% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Tanzania (6.7%), Mozambique (5.9%) and Morocco (4.7%). Benin, with a CAGR of +28.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -25.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
