In 2022, shipments abroad of iron or steel stranded wire, ropes and cables was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, steel stranded wire exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 24%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporter of iron or steel stranded wire, ropes and cables in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), constituting a 36% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest steel stranded wire supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.
In South Africa, steel stranded wire exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+17.1% per year) and Egypt (-5.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of iron or steel stranded wire, ropes and cables imported in Africa shrank to X tons, dropping by -6.7% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, steel stranded wire imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 34% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) held a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (8.3%), Algeria (5.9%), Tanzania (5.2%) and Nigeria (5.1%). Ghana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 48% share of total imports. Algeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +19.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
