In 2021, metal stud-link chain exports in Africa rose markedly to X tons, increasing by 11% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 272%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, metal stud-link chain exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 95%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Congo was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 53% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Namibia (11%) and Senegal (8.2%). Djibouti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Congo increased at an average annual rate of +40.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Djibouti (+231.6%), Senegal (+63.1%), Namibia (+22.5%) and South Africa (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +231.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Congo, Senegal and Djibouti increased by +33, +7.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Congo ($X) remains the largest metal stud-link chain supplier in Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.5% share.

In Congo, metal stud-link chain exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+13.9% per year) and Namibia (+18.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+20.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of iron/steel stud-link chain decreased by -11.5% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal stud-link chain imports contracted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +95.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the major importers of iron/steel stud-link chain, together constituting 69% of total imports. Libya (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 33% of total imports. Ghana, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Tanzania, Angola, Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Cote d'Ivoire and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +25.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
