In value terms, exports of isoprene rubber (IR) in primary forms rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic setback. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates forms structure, together committing 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together achieving an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +21.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest isoprene rubber (IR) in primary form supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -33.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+2.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports of isoprene rubber (IR) in primary forms soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 30% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of isoprene rubber (IR) in primary forms skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the largest importer of isoprene rubber (IR) in primary forms, generating 55% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (6.1%). Kenya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -3.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+40.8%), Algeria (+25.3%) and Morocco (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2021. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.8%) and South Africa (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kenya (+3.9 p.p.), Algeria (+2.3 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported isoprene rubber (IR) in primary forms in Africa, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to -3.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-15.2% per year) and Tunisia (-5.1% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 28%.
