In 2021, overseas shipments of jams, jellies, puree and pastes were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of jams, jellies, puree and pastes in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Swaziland (8.6%). Kenya (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to jam, jelly, puree and paste exports from South Africa stood at +9.8%. At the same time, Mali (+21.2%), Swaziland (+19.5%) and Kenya (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest jam, jelly, puree and paste supplier in Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 17% share.

In South Africa, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-3.8% per year) and Swaziland (+21.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of jams, jellies, puree and pastes imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 17% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Libya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented the major importer of jams, jellies, puree and pastes in Africa, committing 62% of total import. Tunisia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
