In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes, when their volume increased by 5.7% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves exports shrank to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +8.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 59%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+27.5%), Swaziland (+24.5%) and Kenya (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Swaziland and Mali increased by +17, +6.2 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fruit or nut preserves supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +11.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+26.3% per year) and Egypt (-3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fruit or nut preserves importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X), together accounting for 43% of total imports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
