Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -4.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) was the key exporter of jute and jute-like fibers, achieving 65% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 33% share of total exports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the jute and jute-like fibers exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. Mozambique (-1.3%) and Kenya (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+37 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-36.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In terms of the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, jute and jute-like fibers export price increased by +40.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented the main importers of jute and jute-like fibers in 2022, resulting at near 29% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Nigeria (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Togo and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +18.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
