For the third year in a row, the African ketone and quinone market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Ketone And Quinone Production in Africa

In value terms, ketone and quinone production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of ketones and quinones, when their volume increased by 4.8% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ketone and quinone exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of ketones and quinones in Africa, constituting 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ketones and quinones exports, with a CAGR of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest ketone and quinone supplier in Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -4.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 40% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -2.2% per year.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of ketones and quinones in Africa soared to X tons, growing by 35% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ketone and quinone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +132.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together making up a 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ketones and quinones imports, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+15.6%), Tanzania (+8.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.6%), Kenya (+4.6%), Algeria (+3.7%) and Egypt (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-1.3%) and Tunisia (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Ghana increased by +26 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ketones and quinones in Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +18.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+0.7% per year) and South Africa (+2.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
