For the fourth year in a row, the African cutting blade market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.9% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by +0.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of knives and cutting blades (for machines or for mechanical appliances) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cutting blade exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+17.1%) and Tunisia (+13.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tunisia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cutting blade supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+7.9% per year) and Egypt (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of knives and cutting blades (for machines or for mechanical appliances) decreased by -15.3% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 46%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cutting blade imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of knives and cutting blades (for machines or for mechanical appliances) in Africa, mixing up 64% of total import. Morocco (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +20.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
