Knife And Scissors Market Size in Africa

The African knife and scissors market surged to $X in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, faced a precipitous curtailment. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were exported in Africa; growing by 8.2% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Rwanda (5.2%) and Egypt (4.7%). Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to knife and scissors exports from South Africa stood at -36.9%. At the same time, Rwanda (+84.5%) and Ghana (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +84.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.1%) and Tunisia (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia, Rwanda, Egypt and Ghana increased by +5.3, +5.2, +4.5 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest knife and scissors supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -3.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-7.0% per year) and Egypt (-8.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 2,309%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+52.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were imported in Africa; picking up by 12% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), followed by Algeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the largest importers of knives, scissors and blades, together mixing up 47% of total imports. Angola (X tons), Libya (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported knives, scissors and blades in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.3% share.

In South Africa, knife and scissors imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+17.6% per year) and Ghana (+9.7% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 29% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 1,321% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
