The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lactose exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lactose exports from South Africa stood at -11.3%. At the same time, Angola (+247.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+45.0%), Swaziland (+29.2%) and Egypt (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +247.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Swaziland (+17 p.p.), Angola (+4.1 p.p.), Egypt (+3.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-26.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lactose supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.5% share.
In South Africa, lactose exports declined by an average annual rate of -9.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+26.9% per year) and Egypt (+1.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -21.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lactose export price decreased by -28.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of lactose and lactose syrup imported in Africa rose slightly to X tons, increasing by 2.6% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactose imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by Algeria (7%). Nigeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lactose imports into South Africa stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Morocco (+17.0%), Ghana (+13.4%), Tunisia (+11.9%), Algeria (+9.7%) and Egypt (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.0%) and Lesotho (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+17 p.p.), Algeria (+2.8 p.p.), Morocco (+2.2 p.p.), Ghana (+1.9 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-3.4 p.p.), Lesotho (-3.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lactose and lactose syrup in Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, lactose imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+8.5% per year) and Egypt (+0.6% per year).
