In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the African rendered pig fat market, when its value increased by 40% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 986%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rendered pig fat exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 615%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the largest exporter of lard and other pig fat (rendered) in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), committing a 31% share of total exports.

In South Africa, rendered pig fat exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland amounted to $X per ton.

In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rendered pig fat imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) represented the largest importer of lard and other pig fat (rendered) in Africa, creating 79% of total import. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together making up a 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +438.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
