Leather Market Size in Africa
The African leather market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Leather Production in Africa
In value terms, leather production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of leather, when their volume increased by 2.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 20%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporter of leather in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 28% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Sudan (9.5%), Nigeria (8.1%), Kenya (8.1%), Namibia (6.4%) and Uganda (4.9%). Algeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to leather exports from South Africa stood at -7.9%. At the same time, Egypt (+4.7%), Sudan (+3.9%) and Morocco (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-2.7%), Tunisia (-3.9%), Algeria (-4.1%), Ethiopia (-4.4%), Uganda (-9.1%), Tanzania (-14.3%), Kenya (-14.4%) and Nigeria (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Sudan and Namibia increased by +8.8, +6.1 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest leather supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 70% of total exports.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +0.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of leather imported in Africa expanded notably to X tons, with an increase of 11% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of leather imports in 2021 were Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together finishing at 70% of total import. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total imports. Ethiopia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Madagascar (with a CAGR of +26.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest leather importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 84% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +10.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
