Moreover, Burundi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +9.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uganda (-5.9%), Sudan (-6.1%), Ethiopia (-11.0%), Kenya (-12.8%) and Mali (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+8.2 p.p.), Tunisia (+5.7 p.p.), Uganda (+2.6 p.p.), Burundi (+2.3 p.p.) and Sudan (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mali (-2.5 p.p.), Kenya (-3.8 p.p.) and Nigeria (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to -17.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-5.8% per year) and Ethiopia (-16.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.7% against 2020 indices. Nigeria (+33 p.p.), Swaziland (+11 p.p.), Ethiopia (+7.3 p.p.), Botswana (+5.9 p.p.) and Djibouti (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -9% and -23.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +68.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (-6.7% per year) and Morocco (-6.1% per year).
