Leek Market Size in Africa

The African leek market expanded to $X in 2022, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Production in Africa

In value terms, leek production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 46% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Africa amounted to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the amount of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exported in Africa fell sharply to X tons, shrinking by -31.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, namely Morocco, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, represented more than two-thirds of total export. South Africa (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.5% share, followed by Egypt (7.3%). Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +50.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 12% share.

In Morocco, leek exports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-7.9% per year) and Uganda (+52.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 63%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables imported in Africa shrank to X tons, dropping by -10.5% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of leek imports in 2022 were Djibouti (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together reaching 34% of total import. Mauritania (X tons) held a 6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (5.1%), Zambia (5.1%), Cabo Verde (4.9%) and Egypt (4.5%). Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest leek importing markets in Africa were Djibouti ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 36% share of total imports. Egypt, Mali, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Botswana, Mauritania, Zambia, Senegal, Niger and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +69.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, leek import price increased by +1.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
