The country with the largest volume of lettuce and chicory production was Niger (X tons), accounting for 52% of total volume. Moreover, lettuce and chicory production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Tunisia (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger amounted to +16.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (-1.8% per year) and Tunisia (+1.6% per year).

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory yield in Africa dropped slightly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -1.6% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 7.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, shipments abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +16.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), mixing up a 9.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each reached a 5.4% share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lettuce and chicory exports, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012 to 2022. Tunisia (-2.4%), Morocco (-7.7%) and South Africa (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+41 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-10.5 p.p.), South Africa (-12.2 p.p.) and Tunisia (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +8.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-4.5% per year) and South Africa (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory, when their volume decreased by -26.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 66%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Somalia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory imports into Somalia stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Mauritius (+11.7%) and Morocco (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2022. Djibouti experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-4.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (-5.4%) and Namibia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Somalia and Mauritius increased by +24 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Somalia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 5.3% share.

In Somalia, lettuce and chicory imports increased at an average annual rate of +23.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+10.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Somalia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
