Loading Machinery Market Size in Africa

The African loading machinery market rose modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery increased by 16% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, loading machinery exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery, committing 60% of total exports. Ghana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ethiopia (X units). All these countries together took near 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Swaziland (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Tunisia (X units), Egypt (X units) and Morocco (X units) - each reached an 11% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -9.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+45.9%), Burkina Faso (+34.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+29.0%), Ghana (+26.2%), Ethiopia (+8.9%) and Tunisia (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-6.0%) and Egypt (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+14 p.p.), Ethiopia (+3.6 p.p.), Swaziland (+2.3 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -21.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest loading machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+10.5% per year) and Ethiopia (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, remaining constant against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, loading machinery export price increased by +2.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, loading machinery imports in Africa fell to X units, declining by -5% against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, loading machinery imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X units), Morocco (X units), Nigeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Algeria (X units), Angola (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Botswana (X units), Tanzania (X units), Egypt (X units), Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented roughly 75% of total imports in 2022. Ethiopia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest loading machinery importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Kenya ($X) and Algeria ($X), together accounting for 41% of total imports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
