Lignite Market Size in Africa
The African lignite market soared to $X in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Lignite Production in Africa
In value terms, lignite production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of lignites exported in Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, which is down by -35.9% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 268% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lignite exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 326% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the main exporter of lignites in Africa, constituting 100% of total export.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lignites exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt increased by +14 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) also remains the largest lignite supplier in Africa.
In Egypt, lignite exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 56%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Egypt.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Egypt amounted to -8.3% per year.
Lignite Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of lignites imported in Africa declined to X tons, which is down by -1.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lignite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Libya (X tons) represented roughly 90% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +115.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest lignite importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Cameroon ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +70.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 122%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (-6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
