After three years of decline, the African linoleum market increased by 6.6% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X square meters of linoleum were exported in Africa; which is down by -82.2% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports faced a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 2,856% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, linoleum exports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 1,650% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Zambia (X square meters), distantly followed by South Africa (X square meters), Nigeria (X square meters) and Namibia (X square meters) represented the key exporters of linoleum, together constituting 87% of total exports. Egypt (X square meters), Malawi (X square meters) and Kenya (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, shrinking by -12.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 166% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per square meter), while Nigeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+26.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of linoleum, when their volume increased by 9.5% to X square meters. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X square meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, linoleum imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Ethiopia (X square meters), Zambia (X square meters), Ghana (X square meters), Sudan (X square meters), Libya (X square meters), Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters), Madagascar (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters), Senegal (X square meters), Algeria (X square meters), Djibouti (X square meters) and Egypt (X square meters) represented the main importer of linoleum in Africa, making up 79% of total import. Nigeria (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +63.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X), Sudan ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 40% of total imports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Madagascar, Nigeria, Egypt, Libya, Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria, Senegal, Ghana and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 39%.

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
