Linseed Market Size in Africa

The African linseed market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of linseed production was Ethiopia (X tons), comprising approx. 78% of total volume. Moreover, linseed production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), sixfold. Tunisia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Ethiopia amounted to -4.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (+9.0% per year) and Tunisia (+2.8% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of linseed in Africa stood at X tons per ha, with an increase of 3.9% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the linseed yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, overseas shipments of linseed were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 399% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, linseed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 661% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of linseed, namely Nigeria, Egypt and Mozambique, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 277% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+121.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of linseed imported in Africa contracted to X tons, which is down by -13.2% against the previous year. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -32.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.7% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Egypt was the key importer of linseed in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of linseed. At the same time, Algeria (+25.3%), Tunisia (+14.4%) and Morocco (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco increased by +8.5, +1.9 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported linseed in Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 13% share.

In Egypt, linseed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+6.5% per year) and South Africa (+3.7% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed import price increased by +117.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 34%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
