The African liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Africa totaled X tons, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Madagascar (X tons) was the key exporter of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), constituting 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), constituting a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - together made up 8.3% of total exports.

Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Libya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.2%) and Nigeria (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Madagascar (+39 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Libya, Nigeria and Algeria saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -8.7% and -25.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) remains the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria amounted to -7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+0.7% per year) and Nigeria (-12.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (-4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, liquefied petroleum gas (lpg) imports in Africa reduced slightly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Morocco (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the key importers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), together constituting 76% of total imports. Kenya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +64.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. Tunisia, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Tanzania, Algeria and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Kenya, with a CAGR of +52.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
