Lithium-Ion Accumulator Production in Africa

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of lithium-ion accumulators increased by 16% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 261%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 175% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of lithium-ion accumulators, namely South Africa, Algeria and Morocco, represented more than half of total export. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X units), Kenya (X units), Egypt (X units) and Rwanda (X units), together comprising a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +366.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lithium-ion accumulator supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +32.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+119.7% per year) and Uganda (+91.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+30.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Lithium-Ion Accumulator Imports

Imports in Africa

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of lithium-ion accumulators decreased by -12.9% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 44%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 99%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Ghana (X units), Morocco (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) were the major importers of lithium-ion accumulators, together mixing up 63% of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X units), Egypt (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Zambia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium-ion accumulator imports into South Africa stood at -6.7%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+128.2%), Zambia (+127.8%), Nigeria (+127.6%), Ethiopia (+116.0%), Egypt (+111.7%), Zimbabwe (+89.4%), Namibia (+71.4%), Morocco (+63.3%), Algeria (+56.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+41.1%), Ghana (+33.0%) and Kenya (+20.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +128.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Algeria and Namibia increased by +11, +6.5, +6.5, +5.4, +4.5, +4.2, +3.7, +3.4, +2.8, +2.7, +2.4 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lithium-ion accumulators in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +46.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+18.2% per year) and Nigeria (+108.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+57.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
