In 2021, shipments abroad of lucerne (alfalfa) meal and pellets decreased by -3.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 80%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lucerne meal and pellets exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 52% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Sudan (17%) and Sudan (8.3%).
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lucerne (alfalfa) meal and pellets exports, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+20.9%) and Sudan (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Sudan (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+34 p.p.) and Egypt (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sudan (-6.1 p.p.) and South Sudan (-33.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lucerne meal and pellets supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 14% share.
In South Africa, lucerne meal and pellets exports increased at an average annual rate of +25.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+21.0% per year) and Sudan (+11.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, lucerne meal and pellets imports in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 42% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lucerne meal and pellets imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the main importers of lucerne (alfalfa) meal and pellets in 2021, reaching approx. 20% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Tunisia (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (12%), Lesotho (8.8%), Libya (8.4%), Algeria (7.2%) and South Africa (4.7%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +69.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Botswana, Lesotho, Libya, Algeria and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +71.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
