Luggage Market Size in Africa
The African luggage market expanded to $X in 2021, surging by 2.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Luggage Production in Africa
In value terms, luggage production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
After three years of decline, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags increased by 5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, luggage exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons), generating a 9.6% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 73% of total exports. Ethiopia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +36.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Luggage Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of luggage and handbags imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 20% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, luggage imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of luggage and handbags, namely Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Togo, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Rwanda, Algeria, Cameroon, Uganda and Senegal, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Ethiopia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +25.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. Algeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Senegal, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda, Togo and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+15.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
