In value terms, filling containers machinery exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the major exporter of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Angola (12%). Zimbabwe (X units), Benin (X units), Swaziland (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to filling containers machinery exports from South Africa stood at -12.2%. At the same time, Angola (+76.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+69.4%), Zimbabwe (+55.7%), Kenya (+32.0%) and Benin (+21.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +76.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+23 p.p.), Angola (+12 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+4.4 p.p.), Benin (+3.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -43.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest filling containers machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3.7% share.

In South Africa, filling containers machinery exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+82.9% per year) and Kenya (+18.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -23.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers decreased by -25.3% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, filling containers machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

The following importers - Tanzania (X units), Egypt (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - each reached a 5.5% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers imports, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+24.3%), Ghana (+21.9%), Tanzania (+12.8%) and Egypt (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+37 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers in Africa, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.2% share.

In Nigeria, filling containers machinery imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+29.2% per year) and Egypt (+0.7% per year).
