Exports in Africa
Finishing paper machinery exports rose sharply to X units in 2021, with an increase of 12% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, finishing paper machinery exports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Swaziland (X units) represented the major exporter of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard, comprising 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Uganda (X units), Angola (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Zambia (X units), together creating a 49% share of total exports. Kenya (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Swaziland decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+13.0%), Zambia (+8.0%), Tunisia (+4.6%) and Uganda (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-5.5%) and Kenya (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland, Uganda, Angola, Tunisia, South Africa, Zambia and Kenya increased by +8, +7.4, +7, +5.8, +4.7, +4.3 and +2.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Angola, Uganda, Kenya and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Kenya, with a CAGR of +34.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -13.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Finishing Paper Machinery Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X units of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard were imported in Africa; picking up by 29% on the year before. Overall, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, finishing paper machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Algeria was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 35% of total imports. South Africa (X units) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (12%), Sudan (5.5%), Egypt (4.7%) and Kenya (4.5%). The following importers - Uganda (X units), Ghana (X units), Tanzania (X units), Zambia (X units) and Angola (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.
Imports into Algeria increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+32.5%), Sudan (+29.7%), Ghana (+27.2%), Angola (+22.2%), Tanzania (+17.9%), Kenya (+12.5%), Zambia (+11.6%) and Nigeria (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.5% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+23 p.p.), Sudan (+4.6 p.p.), Uganda (+3.4 p.p.), Ghana (+3 p.p.), Kenya (+2 p.p.), Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) and Angola (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -33.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest finishing paper machinery importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 27%.
Ghana, with a CAGR of +30.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Uganda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
