Paper Making Machinery Market Size in Africa
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African paper making machinery market, when its value increased by 7% to $X. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Paper Making Machinery Production in Africa
In value terms, paper making machinery production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -15.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 24%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, generating 51% of total exports. Swaziland (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Morocco (5.6%), Rwanda (5.6%) and Tunisia (5.6%). The following exporters - Kenya (X units), Senegal (X units), Angola (X units), Egypt (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 17% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper making machinery exports from South Africa stood at -9.3%. At the same time, Morocco (+16.7%), Senegal (+13.0%), Kenya (+13.0%) and Swaziland (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. Tanzania, Rwanda and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-4.4%) and Tunisia (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+5.6 p.p.), Tunisia (+5.6 p.p.), Swaziland (+5.3 p.p.), Morocco (+4.8 p.p.), Senegal (+3.4 p.p.) and Kenya (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper making machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+59.7% per year) and Tunisia (+59.0% per year).

Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Algeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Rwanda (X units), Morocco (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented the key importers of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, together constituting 71% of total imports. The following importers - Ethiopia (X units), Egypt (X units), Kenya (X units), Tanzania (X units), Zambia (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Benin (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +71.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard in Africa, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.3% share.
In Algeria, paper making machinery imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-7.6% per year) and South Africa (-6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
