Machinery For Packing Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African machinery for packing market decreased by -3.6% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -16.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, machinery for packing production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping, which increased by 20% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, machinery for packing exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of machinery for packing or wrapping, mixing up 54% of total exports. Egypt (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total exports. Togo (X units), Kenya (X units), Senegal (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Namibia (X units) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to machinery for packing exports from South Africa stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Tanzania (+40.4%), Egypt (+38.5%), Ghana (+18.8%), Togo (+13.2%), Kenya (+11.6%) and Namibia (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-14.0%) and Tunisia (-15.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+11 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.6 p.p.), Ghana (+5.4 p.p.), Togo (+3.3 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-5.3 p.p.), Senegal (-7.1 p.p.) and Tunisia (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest machinery for packing supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 1.5% share.

In South Africa, machinery for packing exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+36.5% per year) and Tunisia (-11.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 2.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, machinery for packing export price increased by +16.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping decreased by -13% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, machinery for packing imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Algeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units), Morocco (X units) and Angola (X units) represented the major importers of machinery for packing or wrapping, together making up 65% of total imports. Tunisia (X units), Libya (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Sudan (X units), Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for packing or wrapping imports, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+12.7%), Ethiopia (+10.9%), Sudan (+10.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.4%), Morocco (+4.8%), Algeria (+4.4%), Libya (+4.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.7%), Tunisia (+3.4%) and Ghana (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-4.2%) and South Africa (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+15 p.p.), Angola (+3.3 p.p.), Algeria (+2.5 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-6.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-23.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest machinery for packing importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 40% of total imports. Egypt, Morocco, Angola, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Sudan and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +12.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild descent. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
