Public Works Machinery Market Size in Africa

The African public works machinery market rose sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 77%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of machinery for public works and building was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 80%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, public works machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Namibia (X units), distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), South Africa (X units) and Ethiopia (X units) represented the largest exporters of machinery for public works and building, together generating 67% of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X units), Swaziland (X units), Tanzania (X units), Uganda (X units), Botswana (X units), Benin (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 24% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +87.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest public works machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 3.2% share.

In South Africa, public works machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-7.6% per year) and Botswana (+26.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+27.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of machinery for public works and building imported in Africa fell slightly to X units, which is down by -3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 362%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mozambique (X units) represented the major importer of machinery for public works and building, creating 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units), Nigeria (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together comprising a 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Kenya (X units), Gambia (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to public works machinery imports into Mozambique stood at +35.5%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+54.7%), Gambia (+52.1%), Madagascar (+50.5%), Ghana (+38.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+26.9%), Nigeria (+13.8%), Kenya (+10.0%), Egypt (+4.0%) and South Africa (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.7% from 2012-2021. Mozambique (+29 p.p.), Ghana (+8.9 p.p.), Madagascar (+5 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+4.4 p.p.) and Gambia (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Mozambique and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +51.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 311%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
