In 2022, overseas shipments of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco increased by 61% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 90%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tobacco making machinery exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 177% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the largest exporter of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 67% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), creating a 17% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X units), Namibia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Rwanda (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +20.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+60.8%) and Tanzania (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-1.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-10.5%) and Zimbabwe (-30.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Rwanda and Tanzania increased by +63, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tobacco making machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +14.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+7.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (-24.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 234% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+169.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco imported in Africa dropped remarkably to X units, with a decrease of -15.9% on the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tobacco making machinery imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented the major importers of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco in Africa, together recording approx. 45% of total imports. Namibia (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Algeria (X units). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Tanzania (X units), Kenya (X units), South Sudan (X units) and Malawi (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 8.5% share.
In Nigeria, tobacco making machinery imports increased at an average annual rate of +28.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-3.5% per year) and Kenya (-1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
