Overall, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, food manufacture machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporter of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Rwanda (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (11%). The following exporters - Namibia (X units), Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Cabo Verde (X units), Morocco (X units), Mauritania (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 21% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+186.2%), Cabo Verde (+45.3%), Rwanda (+19.3%), Namibia (+15.1%), Senegal (+14.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +186.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-6.1%), Morocco (-9.0%) and Tanzania (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+12 p.p.), Namibia (+3.6 p.p.), Senegal (+3 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+2.5 p.p.), Mauritania (+2.3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -17.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest food manufacture machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -3.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-2.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 28% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink decreased by -16.8% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 63%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, food manufacture machinery imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 74%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) was the largest importer of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink, committing 30% of total imports. Ghana (X units) held an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Algeria (7.6%), Morocco (6.3%), Libya (5.1%), Angola (4.9%) and Ethiopia (4.8%). The following importers - Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Zambia (X units), Mozambique (X units), South Africa (X units) and Egypt (X units) - together made up 17% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+42.2%), Botswana (+25.9%), Libya (+17.8%), Zambia (+12.0%), Mozambique (+11.8%), Ghana (+11.4%), Ethiopia (+10.5%), Angola (+4.8%), Zimbabwe (+1.9%) and Egypt (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-2.3%) and Morocco (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+7.1 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.9 p.p.), Ghana (+3.8 p.p.), Libya (+3.4 p.p.), Botswana (+3.3 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-1.6 p.p.) and Morocco (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 40% share of total imports. Angola, Ghana, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +22.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
