Paper Bag Machine Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African paper bag machine market decreased by -8.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 49%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

Paper bag machine exports fell dramatically to X units in 2022, waning by -54.1% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 300%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, paper bag machine exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the main exporter of machines for making bags, sacks or envelopes of paper or paperboard in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Kenya (5.9%), South Africa (5.9%) and Tanzania (5.9%).

Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of machines for making bags, sacks or envelopes of paper or paperboard. At the same time, Morocco (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012-2022. Tanzania and South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kenya (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Egypt ($X) emerged as the largest paper bag machine supplier in Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt stood at +46.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+12.3% per year) and Tanzania (+14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 168% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+14.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of machines for making bags, sacks or envelopes of paper or paperboard decreased by -22% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, paper bag machine imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Lesotho (X units), Tanzania (X units), Algeria (X units), Morocco (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Kenya (X units) represented the largest importers of machines for making bags, sacks or envelopes of paper or paperboard, together comprising 75% of total imports. Egypt (X units), South Africa (X units) and Ghana (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +58.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Lesotho ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
