Morocco dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Algeria (5%), Botswana (5%) and South Africa (5%).

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machines for making containers of paper or paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012 to 2022. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X units) was the largest importer of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard, comprising 47% of total imports. Algeria (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held approx. 28% share of total imports. Tanzania (X units), South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units), Ghana (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Senegal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machines for making containers of paper or paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +73.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+25.9%), Morocco (+23.6%), Senegal (+23.1%), Ethiopia (+14.9%), Algeria (+12.2%), Nigeria (+6.3%) and Egypt (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.3%) and South Africa (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+46 p.p.), Morocco (+6 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt, Nigeria, Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.3%, -5.3%, -12.7% and -14.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +53.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -44.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+36.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
