The African bitumen mixer market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a modest expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Bitumen Mixer Production in Africa

In value terms, bitumen mixer production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 10%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, bitumen mixer exports in Africa dropped remarkably to X units, waning by -39.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 236% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bitumen mixer exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the major exporter of machines for mixing mineral substances with bitumen, achieving 70% of total exports. Zambia (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (7.9%). The following exporters - Uganda (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Kenya (X units) - together made up 8.9% of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machines for mixing mineral substances with bitumen exports, with a CAGR of +37.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+26.0%) and Tanzania (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uganda (-9.7%) and Kenya (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Zambia, Tunisia, Tanzania and Kenya increased by +67, +12, +7, +3 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) emerged as the largest bitumen mixer supplier in Africa, comprising 22% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia amounted to +53.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+71.0% per year) and Zambia (+59.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 326%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+35.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of machines for mixing mineral substances with bitumen were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 30,896% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bitumen mixer imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. Mauritania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Zimbabwe was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machines for mixing mineral substances with bitumen imports, with a CAGR of +112.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+88.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Zimbabwe (+91 p.p.) and Mauritania (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machines for mixing mineral substances with bitumen in Africa, comprising 2.7% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 0.2% share of total imports.

In Zimbabwe, bitumen mixer imports expanded at an average annual rate of +45.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -79% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 997% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe stood at $X per unit.
