Algeria dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), achieving a 9% share of total exports. Ghana (X units), Lesotho (X units), Tunisia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Morocco (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of machines for reeling, unreeling or textile fabrics. At the same time, Lesotho (+72.0%), Ghana (+54.1%) and Mauritius (+33.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +72.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-4.1%), Tunisia (-6.6%) and Morocco (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+74 p.p.), Ghana (+3.3 p.p.), Lesotho (+3 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-8.1 p.p.), Morocco (-16.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-17.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 68% share of total exports. Mauritius, Morocco, Ghana and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +86.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -71.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 165%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Algeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+48.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, textile relling machine imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco (X units), Ghana (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Egypt (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Angola (X units), Kenya (X units), Congo (X units) and Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Congo (with a CAGR of +54.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest textile relling machine importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports. South Africa, Ethiopia, Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Congo and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Congo, with a CAGR of +59.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
