Preserved mackerel exports rose rapidly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 10% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight descent. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved mackerel exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of mackerel (prepared or preserved). Namibia (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+7.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest preserved mackerel supplier in Africa, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

In Morocco, preserved mackerel exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 11%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Namibia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.1%).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of mackerel (prepared or preserved) increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 32%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved mackerel imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) was the key importer of mackerel (prepared or preserved), creating 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together comprising a 32% share of total imports. Sierra Leone (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved mackerel imports into Ghana stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+49.4%), Cabo Verde (+13.9%), Gabon (+7.6%) and Mauritius (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.6%) and South Africa (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+32 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+4.7 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+3.2 p.p.) and Gabon (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mackerel (prepared or preserved) in Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.

In Ghana, preserved mackerel imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cabo Verde (+19.4% per year) and Nigeria (-3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year.
