In value terms, magnetic media exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 499%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -37.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 380% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, imports showed a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 130%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, magnetic media imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 94%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Tanzania (X units) and Namibia (X units) represented roughly 40% of total imports in 2021. In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported magnetic media, not recorded, except cards with a magnetic stripe in Africa, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Djibouti, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -16.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-6.4% per year) and Djibouti (+17.6% per year).
