Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, magnetic media exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 499%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Egypt (X units) and Madagascar (X units) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to magnetic media exports from South Africa stood at +20.2%. At the same time, Madagascar (+36.9%) and Egypt (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+84 p.p.), Egypt (+3.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest magnetic media supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +9.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+23.9% per year) and Madagascar (+34.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -37.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 380% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+20.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in supplies from abroad of magnetic media, not recorded, except cards with a magnetic stripe, which decreased by -3.5% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports showed a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 130%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, magnetic media imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 94%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Tanzania (X units) and Namibia (X units) represented roughly 40% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Morocco (X units), together comprising a 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X units), Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units), Guinea (X units), Djibouti (X units) and Egypt (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +15.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported magnetic media, not recorded, except cards with a magnetic stripe in Africa, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Djibouti, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -16.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-6.4% per year) and Djibouti (+17.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -26.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 126%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+28.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
