Maize Oil Market Size in Africa

The African maize oil market declined to $X in 2022, dropping by -10.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of maize oil decreased by -17.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize oil exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 159% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia represented the key exporter of maize oil in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Egypt (17%).

Exports from Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -14.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+35.8%) and Egypt (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012-2022. In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +38.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, maize oil imports in Africa declined remarkably to X tons, dropping by -22.4% against 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 46%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize oil imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and Libya (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 6.9% share of total imports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of -2.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest maize oil importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of -5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 38%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
