Malt Market Size in Africa
After six years of growth, the African malt market decreased by -4.4% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Malt Production in Africa
In value terms, malt production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Malt Exports
Exports in Africa
For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of malt, which increased by 2.9% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 35%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, malt exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -1.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together committing a 36% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+183.7%), Cameroon (+13.1%) and Egypt (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +183.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-6.1%), Zimbabwe (-10.0%) and Kenya (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+20 p.p.) and Namibia (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-10.8 p.p.), Kenya (-14.8 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (-15.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in Africa, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 9.8% share.
In South Africa, malt exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+160.7% per year) and Mauritius (-3.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Imports
Imports in Africa
After four years of growth, purchases abroad of malt decreased by -14.8% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, malt imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the five major importers of malt, namely Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola and Cameroon, represented more than third of total import. It was followed by Tanzania (X tons), mixing up a 4.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 36% of total imports.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +9.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
