Malt Market Size in Africa
The African malt market totaled $X in 2021, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 7%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.2%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, shipments abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporters of malt (not roasted) in 2021, recording near 33% and 29% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together creating a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cameroon (with a CAGR of +26.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cameroon ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 70% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 55% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +83.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) was the key importer of malt (not roasted) in Africa, committing 45% of total import. Namibia (X tons) held a 4.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (4.6%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Congo (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Angola ($X) and Cameroon ($X), with a combined 43% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Namibia, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Gabon and Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Among the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +11.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
