Swaziland prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.1% share, followed by Tunisia (4.6%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Swaziland increased at an average annual rate of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+39.2%) and Egypt (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Swaziland (+32 p.p.) and Tunisia (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -30.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest maltodextrine supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland amounted to +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+2.4% per year) and Tunisia (+44.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup, when their volume decreased by -12.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, maltodextrine imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup, generating 44% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (8.4%), Algeria (7%) and Senegal (5.2%). The following importers - Ghana (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+36.7%), Morocco (+8.5%), Senegal (+7.0%), Algeria (+4.8%) and Nigeria (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.7% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+18 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -8.1% and -9.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup in Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, maltodextrine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+1.8% per year) and Algeria (+8.0% per year).
