Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +15.6%).

Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas increased by 35% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Senegal was the key importer of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (6.5%), Mali (5.7%) and South Africa (4.6%). The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mandarin and clementine imports into Senegal stood at +50.5%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+91.8%), Nigeria (+57.9%), Mali (+56.3%), Namibia (+23.4%), Gabon (+22.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.7%), Cabo Verde (+13.3%), South Africa (+12.2%) and Mauritius (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +91.8% from 2012-2022. Senegal (+43 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+12 p.p.), Mali (+5.5 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -6.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Africa, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal totaled +42.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+8.9% per year) and South Africa (+13.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -20.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
