The African mannequin market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mannequin exports from South Africa stood at -5.1%. At the same time, Tanzania (+37.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+24.9%) and Namibia (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-15.7%) and Kenya (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire and Namibia increased by +4.4, +2.3 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mannequin supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 2.8% share.

In South Africa, mannequin exports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+20.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+32.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+42.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mannequin imports rose rapidly to X tons in 2022, growing by 12% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mannequin imports reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+41.5%), Nigeria (+19.0%), Ghana (+13.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.4%), Rwanda (+5.2%) and Morocco (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-4.0%), Algeria (-5.1%), South Africa (-5.2%), Ethiopia (-6.3%), Tunisia (-7.3%) and Senegal (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uganda (+24 p.p.), Ghana (+7.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.3 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-1.7 p.p.), Tunisia (-4 p.p.), Algeria (-5.2 p.p.), Senegal (-5.5 p.p.), Ethiopia (-6.5 p.p.) and South Africa (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -16.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 27%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
