In 2021, shipments abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the key exporters of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in 2021, accounting for approx. 35% and 25% of total exports, respectively. Uganda (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (6.9%), South Africa (6%), Tunisia (5.3%) and Morocco (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Uganda, Morocco, Tunisia and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +54.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

Manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports shrank sharply to X tons in 2021, declining by -25% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, namely Morocco, Madagascar, Tunisia, Senegal, Egypt, Malawi and Burundi, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burundi (with a CAGR of +178.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.1% share.

In Egypt, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports decreased by an average annual rate of -20.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+2.5% per year) and Senegal (+9.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -15.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
