In 2021, Togo (X tons) represented the largest exporter of marble and travertine, comprising 44% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together creating a 48% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Togo decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+29.1%), Morocco (+6.8%), Namibia (+5.0%) and Tunisia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Benin (-14.3%) and Egypt (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo, Tunisia, Morocco, Namibia and Angola increased by +44, +7.9, +6.6, +5.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Namibia ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Togo, Egypt, Angola and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Angola, with a CAGR of +26.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of marble and travertine imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 47% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 953% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, marble and travertine imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the largest importers of marble and travertine in Africa, together mixing up 77% of total imports.
