Mate Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African mate market increased by 36% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption posted a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Mate Production in Africa
In value terms, mate production declined significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 81%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Morocco (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of mate production, accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, mate production in Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ghana (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Togo (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Morocco amounted to +7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+1.8% per year) and Togo (+1.8% per year).
Mate Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of mate increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 280%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Morocco (X tons) was the largest exporter of mate, comprising 51% of total exports. Uganda (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X kg) and Ethiopia (X kg) - each finished at a 6.4% share of total exports.
Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uganda (+39.3%), Ethiopia (+31.8%), Nigeria (+17.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.6%) and Kenya (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Uganda, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Ethiopia increased by +34, +13, +6.9, +4.6 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest mate supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Uganda ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +47.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 64%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of mate increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, mate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 159% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the largest importer of mate, making up 38% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mate imports, with a CAGR of +119.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+39.4%), Morocco (+33.4%), Ethiopia (+22.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+20.9%), South Africa (+19.9%), Burkina Faso (+19.8%), Mozambique (+18.2%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+38 p.p.), Algeria (+12 p.p.), Morocco (+5.4 p.p.), South Africa (+4.2 p.p.), Ethiopia (+3.6 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-7.2 p.p.) and Tanzania (-27 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mate in Africa, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +130.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+26.6% per year) and Algeria (+33.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 80%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
