Matches Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African matches market increased by 11% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Matches Production in Africa

In value terms, matches production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Matches Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of matches exported in Africa contracted significantly to X tons, declining by -22.8% compared with 2020. In general, exports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, matches exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) dominates exports structure, together achieving 77% of total exports. Malawi (X tons) took a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Rwanda (7.2%). Niger (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +153.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -11.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+57.8% per year) and Rwanda (+154.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Matches Imports

Imports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of matches, which increased by 5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), followed by Angola (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the largest importers of matches, together generating 63% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Togo (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +22.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest matches importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Angola ($X) and Sudan ($X), together comprising 32% of total imports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin, Mozambique, Rwanda, Guinea, South Africa, Togo and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Benin, with a CAGR of +18.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
